Biographical Information
Based out of Redwood Falls MN. Fishing on the Minnesota River,
My
line of choice is Tuff-line or very good braided lines. I have tried many
kinds and most are ok and do the job. However, Tuff-line, has held true
longer and is very powerful line. Hooks still vary, I use several kinds
depending on the areas I am fishing. Circle hooks work well when you are
in calm water and the fish have the opportunity to take the bait and turn
causing the awesome hook set they are famous for but in heavy current I have
found that cats don’t always turn. They tend to take the bait and quickly
spit it out several time and then take the bait and swim at you. This is
when a good sharp, heavy hook with a twist work well. I have found that
circle hooks will pull out of the mouth when the fish is still facing you
causing yet another miss.
My
bait of choice is still the sucker minnow and river chubs. Golden Eye or Skipjacks are a
very good bait if you have the time and luck to catch them. They do not
keep well, so you have to use them fresh other wise they turn to mush in a short
time. I have also found that your Imagination is the only thing limiting
you to your bait of choice. I catch cats on worms, leaches, suckers, soap,
stink bait, golden eye, “secret”, “secret”, river chubs, ect. Each state
has different laws on what can be used for bait so check with your local DNR
before exploring your options.
I find that early spring
cats are more aggressive on stink baits than summer cats. As we catters all
know, Cats are very fussy when it comes to water temps. I have yet to catch
cats in cold water or through the ice, unless I head down to the Horse shoe
chain near St. Cloud.. I have read about ice fishing cats but around here I
have yet to have it happen. One good point to remember is to keep in mind where
your best cat spot is. In the fall of the year, Mr. Big Walleye loves to haunt
that same hole for feeding reasons. We get more monster Walleyes out of my cat
holes in the fall than any lake walleyes around. We have gotten 10-13#
walleyes out of the Red lake river in spots where no one knew they even
existed.
Day VS. night fishing for
cats. I still find that I get more cats during the day, Early morning and 2:00
pm – 4:00 pm, then late night. Night cats seem to be a bit bigger but much
lower numbers of fish. As a guide I prefer day fishing due to many reasons like
safety and scenery. Night shore fishing is a good venture but one gets many
more snags than in a boat. The dark river water does not reflect light well at
all for boating no matter what kind of lighting you have which creates an
element of danger.
Happy fishing and hope to
see you on the water.
I enjoy
giving others the opportunity to get out on the water and experience the
thrill of catching one of the most powerful fish in fresh water. Or just
getting out and catching what ever might be in the water that day. We have a
great variety of fish in our lakes and rivers. Catfish, Carp, Walleyes, Pike,
Bourbot, Crappies, Small mouth Bass, Rock bass, Large mouth bass, Sturgeon,
Suckers, Muskies and who know what else.
Catfish come in several species, Channel cats, Flathead catfish, Blue cats
and several other tropical versions. We mostly go after the Channels and
Flatheads.
One of the
most exciting, but overlooked, sport fish in North America lurks beneath the
surface of many local rivers. "Fresh water piggies" - the catfish - are among
the best freshwater fighters known. Once you learn the habits, diets, fishing
techniques, and river locations of these "wisker" faced cats you can become
proficient at catching these creatures, often referred to as ugly. Going toe
to toe with one will allow you to discover how beautiful cats really are. Come
join us on the beautiful river and enjoy a days fishing.
